Todd Haley will not return as the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator next season.
According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Steelers have decided to let Haley walk away from the team, rather than renew his contract. Since his deal was up after this season, this is technically not considered a firing.
Haley’s career with the Steelers has definitely been a successful one. The team has posted one of the top-10 scoring offenses in each of the past four years under the former OC. However, tensions between Haley and QB Ben Roethlisberger have apparently been high.
“The relationship has been strained so much,” Rapoport said Wednesday on NFL Network. The Steelers reportedly had to bring quarterback coach Randy Fichtner in to mediate between Roethlisberger and Haley on the sideline.
It is now believed that Fichtner is next in line for the OC position. Rumors have been circulating about the promotion, but Rapoport confirmed that Fichtner is “considered the favorite” for the job.
At the moment things are uncertain for Haley’s future, but the Steelers will now be preparing for next season after their loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
